Diseases to be Wary of this Summer

Thankfully summer has rolled around and sicknesses brought about by the typhoon season is less of a threat. But this doesn’t mean parents can now rest from defending their child’s health and wellness because the scorching heat bring a new set of diseases to look out for.
Here are some of them:
According to the Department of Health (DOH), sore eyes can be characterized as the redness and inflammation of the membranes covering the whites in your eyes. Trauma, chemicals, bacteria, and a viral infection are some of its causes. It can spread from individual to individual, which is why it should be treated as quickly as possible.
- Reduce hand-to-eye contact
- Always wash your hands with water and soap
Cough and cold
Cough and cold can be caused during summer months (as well as during the rainy season). This is because sudden downpours can occur from time to time.
- Try some meditation exercises
- Get eight hours of sleep
- Make it a habit to always wash your hands
- Drink 8-12 glasses of water per day
Measles is often caused by the virus known as paramyxoviridae. It is quite common amongst children. There is a high chance that they could die if this disease was left untreated.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says its symptoms is consist of red and watery eyes, cough, runny nose, high fever, and small white spots that can be found inside the cheeks. Eventually, it can erupt to a rash that can spread all over the body.

Food and water-borne diseases
There are various kinds of food and water-borne diseases to lookout for this summer. A few of them are:
Typhoid is characterized by a severe fever caused by the salmonella typhi bacteria. The symptoms you need to be on the guard for are weak bodies, weight loss, headache, and abdominal pain.
- Avoid consuming contaminated food and drinks
- Foods should be properly cooked before eating them
- Peel the skin of off fruits and veggies before consuming them
- Boil or disinfect water before drinking.
Food spoilage is quite frequent in the summer. Consuming these foods eventually leads to diarrhea and its symptoms, which involves malaise, vomiting, fever, loose bowel movements, as well as abdominal bloating and pains.
- Carry oral rehydration salt solution with you in case of diarrhea
- Be wary of foods served on the streets and those made for out-of-town outings
Hepatitis A or jaundice is caused by consuming unhygienic food items and drinks.

- Avoid swallowing swimming pool water
The summer heat can cause your body’s temperature to rise, which can unfortunately leads to heat stroke. This disease can be fatal if it was left untreated. A number of its symptoms involve confusion, high body temperature, rapid pulse, and difficulty in breathing.
- As much as possible, stay indoors between 10 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon
- Wear hats or bring an umbrella to protect you from the sun
- Rehydrate by drinking a lot of water
