Fatty liver disease (otherwise known as hepatic steatosis) is a condition wherein, as its name suggests, your liver has an excess amount of fat. It is a disease that is developed due to genetic and lifestyle factors and has many negative effects on both the organ itself and the body as a whole. If you find yourself asking what fatty liver is and how it affects peoples’ lives, then continue reading because it is certainly something you should know about — especially if you are living a lifestyle that predisposes you to it.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a classification that has two further subtypes that describe the nature of a given fatty liver — simple fatty liver and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Simple fatty liver is the least harmful kind and it denotes having a certain level of fat without inflammation or damage to the organ’s cells. This usually doesn’t get worse over time, but when it does it can turn into nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) where inflammation and cell damage start to manifest, which then causes devastating complications down the line.

Alcohol-related Fatty Liver Disease

As alluded to above, liver complications arising from a fatty liver are common to see, especially if it’s a case of AFLD. Liver fibrosis, cancer, alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and an enlarged liver are just some of the possible outcomes if a fatty liver goes untreated. All of the aforementioned are serious health issues that can result in death, so if you want to avoid them then you have to take care of your liver.

Diet plays a big part in the development of fatty liver

Key Takeaway

Now that you understand what a fatty liver is and how serious it can affect your life, you would do well to try your best to avoid it. If you are concerned about your liver health, consult your general physician and get a liver assessment. Your doctor will also be able to give you the right advice regarding your lifestyle.
