1. Formulation and Dosage:
(a) Available Dosage Forms:
o Tablet: 500 mg
o Suspension: Available in strengths of 200 mg/5 mL, 250 mg/5 mL, and 500 mg/5 mL
o Syrup: 100 mg/5 mL
o Oral Drops: Available in strengths of 40 mg/mL and 50 mg/mL

(b) Administration: It should be taken with food.

(c) Dosage Recommendations:
o Adults: Initially, 2,250 mg daily in divided doses, which may be decreased to 1,500 mg daily in divided doses when a satisfactory response is obtained.
o Children (2-5 years): Usual dose is 62.5-125 mg four times daily or 200 mg daily in two divided doses.
o Children (6-12 years): Usual dose is 100 mg or 250 mg three times daily.

2. Indications:
(a) Carbocisteine is indicated as adjunctive therapy in respiratory tract disorders characterized by excessive, viscous mucus secretions. This includes conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
(b) It helps reduce goblet cell hyperplasia and plays a role in managing abnormal mucus production

3. Special Precautions and Contraindications:
(a) Contraindications:
o Active peptic or duodenal ulcer.
o Children under 2 years of age.

(b) Special Precautions:
o Patients with a history of gastroduodenal ulcers, chronic bronchial asthma, or respiratory failure.
o Avoid concomitant use with antitussives or medicines that dry up bronchial secretions.
o Use with caution in children (?2 years) and the elderly.
o Pregnancy and lactation
