Risperidone, an antipsychotic medication. Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic that works by altering brain chemicals. It is used to treat:
1. Schizophrenia in adults and children aged 13 and older.
2. Bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children aged 10 and older.
3. Irritability associated with autistic disorder in children aged 5 to 16.
Description:
1. Formulation
(a) Risperidone is available in oral tablets and orally disintegrating tablets (0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg, and 4 mg).
(b) The orally disintegrating tablets can be placed on the tongue and swallowed with or without liquid.
2. Indications
(a) Schizophrenia treatment in adults.
(b) Bipolar I Disorder (acute manic or mixed episodes) in adults (alone or with lithium/valproate).
(c) Irritability in autistic children aged 5 to 16.
3. Contraindications
(a) Known hypersensitivity to risperidone or paliperidone.
(b) Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis (increased risk of death).
(c) Not approved for use in dementia-related psychosis.
