WHAT IS THE MEDICINE USED FOR?
(Indication) Prevention of acute gouty arthritis, nephropathy & Ca oxalate calculi. Treatment of secondary hyperuricemia during treatment of tumors or leukemia.
HOW MUCH AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU USE THIS MEDICINE?
Adult: Initially 100 mg daily. Isolated cases May be increased to 600-800 mg daily in divided doses. Max: 300 mg/dose, 800 mg/day.
Children 10 mg/kg body wt daily in 3 divided doses. Max: 400 mg/day.
(Precautions) Acute gouty attacks. Avoid alcohol particularly beer & foods w/ high purine content (innards eg sweetbread, kidney, brain, liver, heart & tongue & meat extr). Discontinue use if hypersensitivity reactions eg exanthema occurs. Carefully monitor patients w/ renal & hepatic impairment or preexisting hematopoietic disorders. HTN & cardiac insufficiency treated w/ ACE inhibitors or diuretics. Ensure adequate fluid in radiotherapy or chemotherapy neoplasms & Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy.
(Side Effects) Skin & hypersensitivity reactions which may be pruritic, maculopapular, scaly, purpuric & exfoliative.
