Cefalexin is used to treat bacterial infections including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections, bone infections, otitis media, and other infections due to susceptible strains of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.

Cefalexin does not work for sicknesses caused by viruses such as the common cold.

What is in the Cefalexin capsules?

Each generic Cefalexin capsule contains:

  • 500mg of Cefalexin

What are the 500 mg Cefalexin capsules used for?

The Cefalexin capsules can be used to treat the following:

  • Ear infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Bone infections
  • Otitis media

How much and how often should you use the product?

Cefalexin is usually taken three times a day, every 8 hours. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. If this happens, keep taking the medicine as prescribed. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Cefalexin will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

Take cefalexin at the same time each day.

Do not share your cefalexin with another person even if you share the same symptoms.

Mechanism of Action

Cefalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic and contains a beta-lactam and dihydrothiazide. Cephalorins are more resistant to the action of beta-lactamase as compared to penicillins.

Cefalexin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, causing its breakdown and eventual cell death.
