Generic Ciprofloxacin Tablets

Ciprofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics and as such, is used to treat bacterial infections. It can be used to treat patients who have been exposed to anthrax or certain types of plague.

Ciprofloxacin will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

Because fluoroquinolone antibiotics may cause serious side effects, ciprofloxacin should only be prescribed if safer antibiotics are not an option.

What is in the generic ciprofloxacin tablets?

The generic ciprofloxacin tablet:

  • 500 mg of ciprofloxacin

What are the ciprofloxacin tablets used for?

The ciprofloxacin tablets can be used to treat the following:

  • Ear infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Bone infections

How much and how often should you use the product?

Ciprofloxacin is usually taken three times a day, every 8 hours. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. If this happens, keep taking the medicine as prescribed. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Ciprofloxacin will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold.

Take ciprofloxacin at the same time each day.

Do not share your ciprofloxacin with another person even if you share the same symptoms.

Mechanism of Action

Ciprofloxacin acts on bacterial topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV. It targets the alpha subunits of DNA gyrase and prevents it from supercoiling the bacterial DNA, inhibiting DNA reproduction.

Ciprofloxacin may cause serious side effects such as tendon problems, nerve damage, mood or behavioral changes, or low blood sugar.

Stop using ciprofloxacin immediately and inform your doctor if you experience: headache, hunger, irritability, numbness, tingling, burning pain, confusion, agitation, paranoia, memory or concentration issues, suicidal thoughts, or sudden pain or trouble moving your joints.

Rare cases have been reported where ciprofloxacin has caused damage to the aorta, which can lead to dangerous bleeding or death. Proceed to the hospital at once if you experience severe and constant pain in your chest, stomach, or back.
