Mechanism of Action

Irbesartan works by preventing angiotensin II from binding to the AT receptor in tissues such as the vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. Irbesartan and its active metabolite then bind the AT1 receptor with 8,500 times more affinity than they bind to the AT2 receptor. Because Irbesartan prevents angiotensin II from binding to AT receptors, it allows the vascular smooth muscles to relax and prevents the secretion of aldosterone, then effectively lowering the patient’s blood pressure. Without irbesartan, angiotensin II would be able to bind to the AT1 receptor bringing about vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion, leading to raised blood pressure.
