How much and how often should you use the product?
Lutein capsules are taken orally. Consult your doctor on the right dosage or number of capsules you should be taking each day based on your age, overall health, and medical conditions.
It is recommended that you should take one capsule every day. Some AMD trials have used lutein in 10 to 20 mg per day for 3 to 6 months. Again, consult with your doctor for the appropriate dose.
Lutein supplements are best taken with high-fat meals because lutein is a fat-soluble nutrient. Omega-3 rich food like tuna, salmon, eggs, and avocado work well with lutein.
Mechanism of Action
Lutein is naturally present in the macula of the human retina and functions as a filter of potentially phototoxic blue light and near-ultraviolet radiation. It is able to do so, in part, due to the reactive oxygen species quenching ability of the carotenoids, which lutein is a part of. Lutein is more stable to decomposition by pro-oxidants as compared to other carotenoids like beta-carotene and lycopene. Carotenoids have also been found to provide protection against cancer. One mechanism of this is by increasing the expression of the protein connexin-43, which then stimulates the gap junctional communication and prevents uninhibited cell proliferation.
