How much and how often should you use the product?

Potassium citrate tablets are taken orally. Consult your doctor on the right dosage or number of tablets you should be taking each day based on your age, overall health, and medical conditions. Do not take it in larger amounts or for longer than recommended.

Do not crush, chew, break, or suck on an extended-release tablet. Swallow the pill whole. Breaking or crushing the tablet may cause too much of the drug to be released into your system at once. Sucking on the tablet can irritate your mouth or throat.

Take the tablet with a meal or snack, or within 30 minutes after a meal.

Your treatment may include a special diet. It is important for you to strictly follow the diet, especially the food you should eat and avoid in order to control your condition.

Do not stop taking this medication without asking for clearance from your doctor. If you stop taking potassium suddenly, your condition may worsen.

Mechanism of Action

After orally ingesting potassium citrate, it begins to metabolize and release its alkaline load. Potassium citrate therapy is used to increase urinary citrate by modifying the renal handling of citrate, rather than by increasing the filtered load of citrate. Apart from raising the urinary pH and citrate, potassium citrate also increases urinary potassium by roughly the same amount that is ingested. In some patients, potassium citrate is able to cause a transient reduction in urinary calcium.
