DESCRIPTION
RHEA Propylthiouracil Tablet contains propylthiouracil (PTU), an antithyroid medication used to manage hyperthyroidism. Propylthiouracil works by inhibiting thyroid hormone synthesis and by blocking the peripheral conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3). This dual action helps reduce excessive levels of thyroid hormones in the body.

• Treatment of hyperthyroidism
• Management of Graves’ disease
• Preparation of patients with hyperthyroidism prior to thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy
• Management of thyroid storm
• Alternative therapy in patients who cannot tolerate methimazole

DOSAGE
Use strictly as directed by a physician.
• Adults:
Commonly 50–150 mg three times daily, depending on the severity of hyperthyroidism
• Maintenance dose: Adjusted based on clinical response and thyroid function tests
Tablets should be taken at regular intervals to maintain consistent blood levels.

PRECAUTIONS
• Use with caution due to the risk of serious liver injury, which may occur unpredictably
• Regular monitoring of thyroid function tests is required
• Patients should be advised to report symptoms such as:
o Unexplained fatigue
o Dark urine
o Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
o Sore throat or fever (possible agranulocytosis)
• Use with caution in patients with pre existing liver disease
• Recommended as the preferred antithyroid drug during the first trimester of pregnancy, if treatment is necessary
• Consult a healthcare professional before use during breastfeeding
• Inform the physician of all other medications being taken
