DESCRIPTION
METTA SR Metformin Sustained Release Tablet contains metformin, a biguanide oral antidiabetic medication formulated in a sustained release form for gradual drug release. Metformin works by reducing glucose production in the liver, improving insulin sensitivity, and enhancing peripheral glucose uptake. The sustained release formulation helps improve gastrointestinal tolerability and allows convenient once daily dosing.

USES
• Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus
• Improvement of glycemic control as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines
• Adjunct to diet and exercise to lower blood glucose levels
• Management of insulin resistance
• Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as prescribed

DOSAGE
Use strictly as directed by a physician.
• Adults: 500 mg once daily, usually taken with the evening meal
• Dose may be gradually increased based on blood glucose response and tolerability
The tablet should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or split the sustained release tablet.

PRECAUTIONS
• Not indicated for type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis
• Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver impairment
• Periodic monitoring of kidney function is required
• Temporarily discontinue prior to radiologic procedures involving iodinated contrast media, as advised
• Avoid excessive alcohol intake due to increased risk of lactic acidosis
• Consult a healthcare professional before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding
• Use under medical supervision in elderly patients

SIDE EFFECTS
• Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort)
• Metallic taste
• Reduced appetite
• Vitamin B12 deficiency with long term use (rare)
• Rare but serious: lactic acidosis, especially in patients with renal impairment
Most gastrointestinal side effects are mild and reduced with sustained release formulations.
