Description:
When used on an open wound, silver sulfadiazine prevents bacteria from growing and spreading. This reduces the possibility that the bacteria may migrate to nearby skin or into the blood, where it may result in a dangerous blood infection (sepsis). Sulfa antibiotics, of which silver sulfadiazine is a member, should not be administered to newborns or preterm infants for the first two months of life due to the possibility of major adverse reactions.
