When the typical medications do not sufficiently relieve persistent heartburn, metoclopramide is used as a short-term (4–12 weeks) remedy. It is mostly used to treat heartburn that happens during the day or right after eating. Metoclopramide is also taken by diabetic individuals who have impaired stomach emptying (gastroparesis), which can reduce the damage stomach acid causes to the swallowing tube (esophagus) and aid in recovery.
